Types of chemical separation processes

When it comes to the separation process of distillation, there are basically two types of separation process, single-stage separation process and multi-stage separation process. Before further discussing the specifications of the distillation equipment and the layout of the distillation equipment design, it is important that we understand the basic differences between the two separation processes.

Single-stage separation process

The single-stage separation process is more like an evaporation process, also known as flash evaporation. It involves the removal of volatile components from a solution by heating or boiling.

Multi-stage separation process

This process is also an evaporation process, but there are several stages. Follow the design of sequential process in this process. This helps to allow more efficient methods and minimal waste.


The basis of distillation equipment

When it comes to the basic definition of the distillation process, distillation is the chemical separation based on the volatility of the components present in the solution. In order to achieve the distillation process, heat transfer is used so that the liquid and vapor present in the solution can interact. The interaction between liquid and vapor is done in consideration of countercurrent in the vertical column. As mentioned above, the chemical separation of the components is done with the help of their volatility. Volatility is the vapor pressure of the component.

Although each type of distillation equipment follows a different design pattern, each type of distillation equipment follows some standard practices. Let's take a look at these general steps.

  • The first step is that you must evaluate the gas-liquid balance data.

  • After evaluating the data, you must calculate the required balance phase.

  • You must decide on the pallet hydraulic system.

  • After determining the tray hydraulics, you must choose an accurate tray to improve the efficiency of the distillation process.
