Beer Packaging

Packaging serves multiple purposes, including protecting beer from oxygen, ensuring consistent carbonation, and preserving flavor integrity.

Beer packaging is more than just putting beer into a container; it's a critical step in the brewing process that significantly impacts the final product. The right packaging can enhance the overall consumer experience and help your beer stand out in a competitive market.

What is brewery bottling?

Beer bottling refers to the process of packaging and selling beer in glass bottles. This packaging method is common in the beer industry. At the end of the brewing process, beer is packaged in a variety of ways, including filling individual bottles, capping them or sealing them with corks, and then resealing them to maintain optimal freshness.

Beer bottling can be done in a variety of bottle shapes and sizes. From classic long-necked bottles to unique screw-top bottles, each container offers different aesthetics and functions. Brewers often choose specific bottle shapes to enhance the beer's appearance and appeal to different consumer preferences.

What is beer canning?

Beer canning refers to the process of packaging and selling beer in metal cans, typically aluminum cans. This packaging method is becoming increasingly popular in the beer industry, especially in the fast-moving consumer goods market and the era of convenient packaging. Beer canning typically uses aluminum cans as packaging containers. These cans come in various capacities, such as 330 ml, 355 ml, or 473 ml, depending on market demand and consumer preferences.

Does canned beer taste better than bottled beer?

There's nothing quite like enjoying a fresh draft beer at your local bar or brewery taproom. But when you don't have access to on-the-go beer and need packaged beer, aluminum cans are undoubtedly the best choice for preserving beer's quality. Cans block all UV rays, significantly reducing the likelihood of beer spoilage (a slight change in flavor). Glass cans let in light, which can break down certain hop compounds and alter the beer's flavor, turning a tropical IPA into a milder lager. Cans are completely sealed, also keeping out oxygen. Oxygen can sometimes enter during the bottling process, leading to over-oxidation and giving the beer a cardboard taste (not something we enjoy).

Beer in glass bottles stays cold longer, but does that mean bottled beer tastes better? The Huffington Post conducted an experiment with four different beer brands: Budweiser, Heineken, Sierra Nevada, and Sapporo, both in cans and bottles. The goal was to serve the beer in mugs so no one could tell which was which. The tasters compared the beers, guessing which they thought was canned and which they liked better. The results showed that the tasters preferred the canned beer for three of the four beers, with 54% of the tasters correctly identifying the canned beer.

Flavor Differences

There is no essential difference in the taste of canned and bottled beer. Consumers are easily influenced by preconceived notions of quality that aren't borne out by actual tasting. Taste is not a factor in the quality difference between the two packaging methods.

Storage Quality

Canned beer has a slight advantage in terms of freshness. The most detrimental factors to beer are light and oxygen. If beer is exposed to excessive oxygen within the container, it develops an unpleasant, musty odor that is immediately noticeable to customers.

Aluminum cans are sealed with minimal headspace to minimize the potential for degradation due to oxygen.

Automated bottling lines typically subject bottles to a stream of high-pressure water to create foam in the beer, which displaces oxygen and replaces it with carbon dioxide. The system then caps the bottle before air is re-entered. Many small and medium-sized breweries manually fill using a counter-pressure filling head, which dispenses carbonated beer directly into the pressurized bottle, minimizing carbon dioxide loss.

Consumer Preferences

Canned beer is growing in popularity as more brewers consider cans the optimal packaging method.

Factors to Consider

  • Target Market: What packaging method does your target consumer group prefer?

  • Transportation and Storage Needs: Does your product require long-term storage or long-distance transportation?

  • Brand Positioning: Is your brand image and market positioning more premium and traditional, or more youthful, innovative, and convenient?

Bottles and cans both have their unique advantages and application scenarios. The ultimate decision should be based on your business needs, target market, and brand strategy to ensure that the packaging you choose maximizes your sales and market growth.
