Beer Storage

Once beer is produced and ready to be sold, it needs to be stored. Storage is usually short and takes place at the brewery. A brewpub will store beer in its original fermentation tanks until it can be transferred to a container. At a packaging brewery, it can take several hours from the time the beer is filtered to when it is kegged or bottled. Normal bottling and kegging operations take place at low temperatures, with breweries keeping kegs refrigerated at about 3°C (38°F) until they are ready for distribution. At this stage, it is best to keep the bottles in a cool environment.

Barrels

Barrels are one of the oldest and most traditional ways of storing liquids. Made up of a series of planks held together by metal rings, barrels not only have historical value in beer, but also play an important role in the storage and aging of most alcoholic beverages. By far the most important barrel in the beer industry is the barrel.

Kegs

Kegs are the main dispensing container in the beer industry. Draft beer served in bars is kegs. These metal (sometimes plastic) containers have a tube that extends to the bottom, usually with a ball-lock device to seal. When connected to a tap fitting, gas is pushed into the barrel, pushing beer through the tube and out the ball-lock fitting.

  • 1/2 Barrel Keg

The most common keg size in the US is the half barrel, which holds 15.5 gallons and holds 124 pints or 165 12-ounce glasses.

  • 1/4 Barrel Keg

The 1/4 barrel, or keg, holds 7.75 gallons and comes in two sizes: short and wide or tall and thin, and is not as common as it once was. The 1/4 barrel holds 62 pints or 82 12-ounce glasses.

  • 1/6 Barrel Keg

The 1/6 barrel (or one-sixth barrel) replaced the old barrel. A 1/6 barrel is equivalent to 41 pints or 55 12-ounce bottles.

  • 50 Liter Keg

The 50-liter keg is common in breweries in Europe and the UK, where it is the standard. Just like the half barrel in the US. The 50-liter keg holds 105 pints or 140 12-ounce glasses of beer.

Cans

Canning technology has gone through many changes and advancements and is now one of the most popular beverage packaging equipment in the world. Canning technology is often the preferred packaging method for brewers and beer consumers because it reduces exposure to light and oxygen, is cheaper to transport, and is easy to recycle.

Bottles

The bottle will always be the preferred packaging unit for beer. Whether it is cork or bottle cap, the bottle is still used to package beer around the world and comes in a variety of sizes and styles.

How to store beer?

The ideal storage temperature for beer is 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit (about 20 to 13 degrees Celsius). If the storage temperature is too low, the beer will taste bland. If the storage temperature is too high, the beer will have a stronger flavor and will age faster. Most beers are best served at room temperature (13 to 15 degrees Celsius). Standard beers are best stored in a cellar (13-13 degrees Celsius). Some beers can be aged for a year or more, while others can be aged for ten years or more.

Does beer need to be stored in the refrigerator?

It is best to store beer in a refrigerated container. Please consult for draft beer and other craft beers. The flavor of beer will age faster and lose freshness if stored in an unrefrigerated container. The role of the refrigerator is to slow down microbial and physical changes in food, and this is also true for beer. If you cannot store beer in the refrigerator, store it in the coolest, darkest place in your home, away from high humidity environments. Many people believe that rapid changes in temperature will spoil beer, but this is usually not a real problem.

The right way to store beer

  • Store beer in the right place. Storing beer upright ensures that the sediment (yeast) stays at the bottom. In addition, storing beer upright reduces oxidation and prolongs its shelf life.

  • Store beer in a dark place. Enough UV or blue light can cause beer to "stink" or "smell", which means that the beer does not taste as good as expected.

  • Keep it cool. High temperatures not only accelerate the aging and flavor development of beer, but also damage the beer. The ideal storage temperature is 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.
