Speaker Mel Gadd, MA Beekeeper Association's 2018 "Beekeeper of the Year". Each month of this series highlights a different brewery and science or conservation project.
About the speaker:
For over 12 years, Mel has been involved with the Essex County Beekeepers Association (ECBA) and keeping bees in Cambridge, MA. He was the Chair of the ECBA Bee School in 2015. Mel maintains 21 hives, two located in his backyard, three at schools where he works with the 1st and 5th graders as the beekeepers, and 16 hives at Mass Audubon Drumlin Farm & Wildlife Sanctuary in Lincoln, MA. Mel started a major beekeeping program at the Mass Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary, both in the fields, as well as established an educational program on the bees as part of their regular program. This includes a five-week Bee School where people learn how to keep bees. Mel has been involved with some of the non-traditional types of hives (top bar & Warre hives) and has been teaching about these at a number of forums in the region. Mel also travels around the region giving talks at schools and other groups on beekeeping and its importance to us all.
Proceeds from this lecture series support the operation and continued growth of Zoo New England, its education programs and conservation initiatives.
