Settlers of Catan Tournament at Down The Road Beer Co.

Settlers of Catan Tournament at Down The Road Beer Co.

Register

We don’t know whether it’s the way the game was built or the joy that comes from announcing to the room that you have wood for sheep, but there's something about Settlers of Catan that makes it still hold up even 3+ decades after it came out (don't wikipedia fact check us, we're right, it's been over 3 decades). So we're hosting a Settlers tournament on May 2nd at Down the Road Brewery in Everett.

We're sure you have some questions, so we're answering them here...

Q: What if I don't know how to play Settlers of Catan?

A: Then you're a philistine. But that's totally cool. We will have an expert rules-ologist on hand to explain how the game works before we get started.

Q: I only play Settlers if it's with my fourteen favorite expansions.

A: Go away.

Q: How does this work?

A: Bracket style tournament. Everyone plays in one of four games, and the winner from each game advances to the finals. Tournament champ gets a (not very expensive) prize, a trophy and immortality in our Hall of Champions (http://www.playboardgameempire.com/hall-of-champions/).

Q: Everett? Isn't that like 800 miles north of the city and you need a sherpa to show you how to get there?

A: Actually it's only ten minutes outside of Boston. You take the orange line to Sullivan Square and then switch to a bus that drops you off about a block from the brewery.

Q: A BUS??! WHAT ARE YOU INSANE??! WHO TAKES A BUS?!

A: Argh, fine, just Uber.

Q: I prefer Lyft.

A: Sure.

Q: So this is definitely happening, right?

A: Only if we get at least five people to sign up, and we're all filled up once we hit 18 players, so grab a spot quick.

Q: QuickLY.

A: Go away.

DTR Presents: The Chef Brew Project with The Gallery - W Hotel

Tickets: $50

If you have ever been to a Down The Road beer dinner, you know the pleasure of a well-chosen course - tart sours and juicy burgers, complex IPAs and hot curries and, of course, rich stouts and dark chocolate. Nothing is better than a well-paired nosh, and we honestly can’t get enough of them (check our events calendar - the proof is in the pudding). But this got us thinking, what happens if we go deeper on this concept? The Brew Chef Project puts our monthly featured chef behind our brewhouse control panel to craft their own custom beer. The chef’s beer will take center stage alongside a selection of DTR classics as each beer is paired with a unique, catered course for our esteemed guests.

Round Two

Chef Derek Barragan from The Gallery at W Hotel will be joining us on April 24th with a creative and mouth-watering menu that will surprise and delight your palate. Chef Derek, along with food and beverage manager Maurice Rodriguez, teamed up with Down The Road head brewer Donovan Bailey to create a Triple IPA that will be paired with the final dish of the night. Those lucky enough to have secured tickets will enjoy that and three other courses paired with a diverse lineup of our beers. Guests are encouraged to vote on their favorite dish combination; the winning course will be announced at the end of the night.

Looking Ahead

Down The Road has booked a different chef for every last Tuesday for the rest of the year. The list is filled with all sorts of folk, from James Beard recipients to lifetime restaurant veterans to upstart visionaries with dreams of greatness. We want to provide an arena to showcase the many culinary gems that have sprouted across the state, and we invite all of you to join us for what promises to be a celebration of flavor like no other. Check our list of upcoming Brew Chefs for a taste of things to come.

Board Game Speed Dating

Board Game Speed Dating

Purchase tickets here

Finding someone can be horrifically painful. But board games are always awesome. So what if you combined board games and searching for a partner?

Picture this: You sit down for a night of games. A gaming concierge walks you through several games over the course of the night. You play classics and have fun playing brand new games you've never heard of, playing each with a different group of people, getting a chance to meet some other fun singles. All while in a really cool brewery with plenty of delicious adult beverages. At the end of the night, you give your gaming concierge a list of the folks you met that you'd like to date and a list of those you met that you'd like to just hang out with as friends. If any two people put down the same name as each other in either column, then your gaming concierge will make sure you get each other's e-mail address and you can coordinate a time to hang out.

Best case scenario: You find true love, discover some awesome board games, and make some new friends.

Bad case scenario: You accomplish only one of those three things, which is still pretty great.

Worst case scenario: There will be alcohol.

Before you decide to buy tickets, a few basics we should cover:

1) This is for single people ages 21-35.

2) Tickets are $20 each, but they come with a $5 gift card to the brewery. The brewery also will have a food vendor on-hand that night serving deliciousness all night, but your gift card unfortunately can't be used towards the food as they are an independent vendor not associated with the brewery. What food vendor you ask? Great question. They're called T'AHPAS 529 and they are a lively modern Spanish and Mediterranean restaurant with unique specialties from around the globe.

3) Refunds are only available to those who cancel with more than 24 hours' notice (exceptions will be made for emergency situations on a case-by-case basis). After that, we're blowing the money from your ticket sale on something awesome and nonrefundable. This is partly because we love living a life of extravagance on someone else's dime, but also because it's not fair to everyone else if the attendance is lower than they thought it would be because a handful of people flaked at the 11th hour.

4) If we get to 24 hours before the event and still haven't sold five tickets for each gender we will cancel the event (and notify you). We think this is very unlikely, but wanted to include a note about it in case that possibility arose.

5) How many games we have and which ones we use will be based in part on how many people attend, so we can't tell you for sure what we'll have right now. But the goal is for all of them to be fun, light, easy-to-learn games, and to include both ones you have played before and some new ones we think you'd enjoy. No, they are not games focused on sparking conversation, but we have a hunch that over the course of a game together, you'll have a gut instinct about whether or not you'd want to date/hang out with someone all the same.

Art Show with AcomaArt @ Down The Road Beer Co.

Alvin "Acóma" is a Boston-based artist with over 20 years of experience working as a painter, sculptor, and airbrush artist. His journey as an artist began at the early age of 11 as he practiced graffiti art. In 1995, he was featured in an exhibit hosted at the Massachusetts State House and titled "Graffiti In The House." His work has been auctioned off and purchased by many people such as Marcy Jackson (Assistant Attorney General), Paul Simons, from Partners and Simons and many more. The opportunity to feature his art at such a prestigious venue inspired him to create more works of art on canvas.

Since then, he has collaborated with several artists and featured his talent on murals displayed throughout the Boston area. He attended MassArt where he studied graphic design and honed his artistic talent. Throughout college, he co-owned a business named MadInk, where he designed and airbrushed custom apparel for individuals who were looking for unique garments that could not be purchased in any major retail store. In 2014 he was commissioned by the Boston Police Academy to create a portrait of the late Mayor Menino and presented it to him during his last year in office.

Acóma' continues to grow as an artist and believes in building avenues for individuals to explore their artistic talents. Today, he is the owner and Director of Paris Street Gallery/Studios, a space in Everett, Massachusetts that houses his own private studio and promotes art to the greater Boston-area community.

The Brew Chef Project: Toro vs. Little Donkey

Tickets

The Bay State is in the middle of a culinary renaissance. It wasn’t long ago that a basket of greasy fried clams was the pinnacle of Massachusetts cuisine. Now it seems like every town and city in the Commonwealth has an upscale eatery with the chops to stand up to the best, and Down The Road wants in on the action.

Introducing: The Brew Chef Project. Each month, DTR will host a special dinner presented by renowned local chefs, and we’re kicking off with a big one: Toro vs. Little Donkey.

The Brew Chef Project

If you have ever been to a Down The Road beer dinner, you know the pleasure of a well-chosen course - tart sours and juicy burgers, complex IPAs and hot curries and, of course, rich stouts and dark chocolate. Nothing is better than a well-paired nosh, and we honestly can’t get enough of them (check our events calendar - the proof is in the pudding). The chef’s beer will take center stage alongside a selection of DTR classics as each beer is paired with a unique, catered course for our esteemed guests.

Round One

Nothing gets the party started like a little star power, so we’re kicking off with Toro and Little Donkey. Two of the pillars of Boston’s cutting edge culinary scene are meeting in the ultimate showdown of good eats and tasty brews. Both of the teams will meet in advance of the event to collaborate on cooking up an English-style Extra Special Bitter (ESB) that will play first fiddle for the dinner. Then on Tuesday, March 27th, those lucky enough to have secured tickets will enjoy two preparations per course of beer and small plate pairings. Guests will be encouraged to vote on their prefered flavor combination, and a winner will be announced at the end of the night.

Looking Ahead
