Jill McCracken x The Hats

Doors at 7pm
Music at 8pm
$5 cover at the door

Jill McCracken is an indie soul songstress whose music is a celebration of feeling— anything that she’s got on the inside (and there’s a lot on the inside), is triumphantly released out into the world. Though Jill’s songs catch the ear as pop tunes, touching heavily on classic soul and Motown influences, a closer listen lets the audience know that these aren’t as simple as ABC, 123; there’s conflict that lies just beneath the surface of the songs, as nodded to by Jill’s sweet and savory lyrics. This isn’t a masquerade of beauty; it’s a celebration of Jill’s honest-to-goodness truth of life and love— not only the beautiful, terrible, horrible parts, but especially all the in-betweens.

Inspired by a destructive and loss-heavy apartment fire in June of 2016, the Hats have cleaned up, streamlined and will be self-releasing their first full-length record since 2014 this year. Surprisingly, the band, who continue to live together, see the fire as something of a blessing, offering a chance to start fresh with a focus on the more important aspects of their music. The album will be the first to be released as The Hats. It will feature deeper, more eclectic lyrical subjects, and more intricate arrangements from singer/songwriter, Patrik Gochez, as well as the lead vocals of keyboardist, Brittany Laine, and lead guitarist, Joey Pierog. Original members, bassist Brenden Harisiades, and drummer, Bobby Rice, offer a rhythm section more solid and creative than ever before.

Originally established as ‘Pat & the Hats’ in 2012 to support the release of Gochez’ chamber-pop debut, Heavy Loader, the band released both a full-length record (Fake it till You Make a Hit 2014) and a follow up EP (Pat & the Hats 2016). They quickly became a regionally recognized name receiving a New England Music Award for ‘Best Pop Act’ in 2014, a nomination in the same category in 2015, and accolades from regional press outlets in NH, MA, VT and beyond. “The band has a polyglot of influences, from late ‘70s punk-pop to more modern acts like the Flaming Lips, all rooted in classic sensibility… (M. Witthaus The Hippo Press).” The diversity in the indie/pop-rock band’s sound nudged them into a variety of showcases and festivals, sharing bills with Lucius, Lake Street Dive, and the late Charles Bradley. 2018 holds no lack of momentum for the freshly rebranded Hats, as they prepare for the release of their next full-length album.

Dub Apocalypse Double IPA Beer Release

Dub Apocalypse is an instrumental dub reggae band from Boston, MA. The lineup includes Tommy Benedetti (drums), Timo Shanko (Sax/Bass), Johnny Trama (gtr), Van Martin (gtr) and Aaron Bellamy (bass). They have created their own unique sound that fuses the militant toughness of Sly and Robbie, and Scientist productions, with a balanced twin guitar attack, explosive Coltrane inspired sax, and a healthy dose of improvisation. The band plays a mix of classic Jamaican tunes and dub plates from the 70s and early 80s, mixed with their own compositions. Featuring current and former members of John Brown's Body, Ghosts of Jupiter, Morphine and G Love and Special Sauce, DA brings decades of combined experience from clubs, theaters and festivals around the globe to the stage every night. Drummer Tommy Benedetti (JBB) formed the band in 2007 and was quickly joined by longtime musical brothers, Johnny Trama on guitar, and Timo Shanko, a dual threat, who is an equal force on bass and tenor sax. In the past couple of years, DA has solidified into a consistent lineup with the addition of Van Martin and Aaron Bellamy. This has inspired the band to concentrate more on writing and recording original material, while still maintaining a busy performance schedule, further crafting their deadly, unique sound. DA maintains a busy schedule in New England with appearances at many festivals, clubs and pubs. They have 2 successful long running residencies, won a Boston Music Award in 2011 for Best International Act, and were recently named "One of the 10 Local Acts You Have to Hear Now" by the Improper Bostonian. The Dub Apocalypse live show is a soul shakin' throwdown, and they invite you along for the journey.

People’s Blues of Richmond (or PBR as they are affectionately referred to by their fans) is one of those rare three-pieces that somehow conjures the sonic power and visual intensity of a thunderstorm. Think Jimi Hendrix Experience meets MC5. They take psychedelic blues rock to a different level with a lyrical element seldom found in the genre. Think Bob Dylan writing lyrics for Black Sabbath songs. It’s hard to imagine until it’s right in your face. Then it’s hard to forget.

HearNowLive Presents: Jake Swamp and The Pine with PCR

Two dudes. One beard. 14 strings. Jake Swamp and The Pine is a americana/folk duo featuring Drew on rhythm guitar and vocals, and Stu on mandolin (for the mando-win). Influenced by a myriad of musicians ranging from The Grateful Dead to Stan Rogers to Johnny Flynn, the duo has an extensive collection of originals, but also a collection of original interpretations of songs you can sing (or yell) along to. The two met on Craigslist in April 2018 and the rest was history.

Opening band PCR combine traditional roots reggae and ska with the arena rock intensity of British rock n’roll from the late 60’s to mid 70’s. The veteran musicians are all from Boston bands that had their important local moments packing the Paradise Rock Club to performing intimate venues at O’Brien’s in Allston. PCR originally formed over a decade ago reformed in late 2017 more mature and seasoned and ready to take the audience on a roller coaster ride guided by Roger Daltry and Jimmy Cliff so hold on tight. Led by the honest and powerful vocals of Tom McKnight the band will have fans focused on the dance floor and their instantly recognizable sound.

Fire Cannot Kill a Quizmaster: A Game of Thrones Quiz

Do you drink and know things? Did you skip filling out a March Madness bracket in favor of a GOT death pool? Are you mumbling the names of those who've wronged you under your breath right now? On Saturday, April 20th we’re headed back to the seven kingdoms to celebrate the final season of Game of Thrones with another edition of Fire Cannot Kill a Quizmaster! If you went to the others, don’t worry, this will be bloodier, geekier, and finished long before George R.R. Martin releases another book. Yes, we've been making that same joke since 2015. It’s still true.

The vast majority of the quiz will cover the Game of Thrones TV show through Season 7. Round eight, as always, will be “Random Knowledge” and any, and everything Game of Thrones will be fair game there. No we won’t give you additional hints. Cheaters, and daughters with king’s blood, will be burned at the stake.

Admission to the realm comes at a price - $5 (no coins, paper currency please). The winners will be as rich as the Lannisters (incest and patricide optional), so bring your friends, your direwolves, and your dragons. The more commoners who play, the more riches you’ll earn.

Remember, valar quizghulis, all men must quiz, so we hope to see you on the 20th. As George R.R. Martin once warned, “for every person who doesn’t come to a Geeks quiz, I kill a Stark.”

Registration for this quiz is REQUIRED! Head on over to http://bit.ly/GameOfThronesReg to register your team.
====================================

THEMED QUIZ FAQ
Should I wear a costume?
YES! Some of our venues may have a costume contest if there's enough participation, but that's up to the venue and host.

How do you sign up? Where do you buy tickets?
Head on over to http://bit.ly/GameOfThronesReg to get your team registered. Please remember registrations are NOT a reservation of seating, but it will help us ensure that we have ample space for all our teams. Our theme quizzes tend to fill up quickly and we will turn away teams that did not pre-register. You will not purchase tickets in advance, simply pay the $5 per player entry fee in cash when you arrive at the quiz. Registrations will close 24 hours before the quiz and walk-up space might be available on a first come, first serve basis.

Will I get some sort of email confirmation?
You and your alternate captain should receive an automated email after submitting your registration and, as long, as long as that email doesn't indicate that you're on stand-by, you should plan to be at the quiz. The week of the quiz, we'll shoot you another reminder as well.

My city says "Sold Out"! Now what?
You can still register for the event for a stand-by spot if your city is still a drop-down option! If there's sufficient interest, or a team drops out, we'll let you know! We make no promises that you'll be able to get in, but if we can make it happen, you'll be the first to know.

When will "Stand-by" teams know if they have a spot?
That depends on a lot of factors, but we'll let you know as soon as we can. The latest you'll know is 24 hours before the event.

How do you change your team name, number of players on the team or cancel a registration?
After you've registered, you can make changes to it by emailing us at marketing@geekswhodrink.com. You can also change your team name when you arrive at the quiz.

Is this a free quiz?
No, it's $5 per person to play (bring cash!), and we'll ask you to pay for everyone on your team before we give you quiz materials. If a team member is going to be late, we won't ask you pay in advance, but if they fail to pay on arrival, your team will be disqualified.

What's the maximum/minimum players per team?
There is no minimum, but if you want to win, you should have a fully staffed squad. We're happy to help you find teammates in advance on social media or on the day of. Team maximum is strictly six players, as always. Everyone sitting with you is considered part of your team.

Do spectators have to pay?
Yes. Yes, they do. Spectators generally have to pay for sporting events, right? This also goes for Geeks Who Drink employees that aren't working at the event and the people they make love to.

Can my dad/girlfriend/friend sit at our table and not play?
No. Six people max on a team and all players must pay. If they're sitting with you and not playing, we're going to ask that they move.

How long will the quiz last?
Our regular quizzes run about 2 hours, but themed quizzes require a bit more heavy lifting in terms of logistics, scoring and extra stuff we may have planned. Average is about 2 1/2 hours.

I'd like to help promote the quiz/talk to you on my podcast/contribute some bonus prizes.
Great! Contact us at marketing@geekswhodrink.com and we'll see about making that happen.

Cycles & Swimmer

Cycles epitomize the power-trio format with ripping guitar, fat bass grooves played out through furious slapping, and dynamic drum beats flowing over intricate tempo changes. Each member wields a unique take on their instrument that when played together, forms a truly fresh and cohesive sound. Patrick Harvey commands the guitar with speed and precision reminiscent of Jimmy Herring while using his loop pedal virtually as its own instrument, a skill unique only to him. Michael Wood has subtly forged a drum style that showcases his rare ability to mashup funky hip-hop beats with frenzied rock riffs and only displays flashy technique when necessary while implementing the creative use of various sound-modulating drum triggers. At the heart of the band lies Tucker McClung’s dominant slap-bass chops that captivates audiences and pumps the musical blood through the band.

Seth McCullough and Last Call Foundation's Marathon Fundraiser

  • Down The Road Beer Co. (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

As many of you know, on Monday April 15th, I will be running in the 123rd Boston Marathon. I have a lot of emotions about this decision already… terrified, excited but most importantly honored to have been chosen by the Last Call Foundation to run as part of their team. All funds raised for my efforts will be donated to a foundation so near and dear to myself, my family and my fellow firefighters throughout the state.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Last Call Foundation, it is an organization which provides funding, education and research to advance the safety needs of the firefighting community. The Last Call Foundation was founded by Kathy Crosby-Bell in honor of her son, fallen firefighter Michael Kennedy, who along with Fire Lieutenant Edward Walsh died battling the nine-alarm fire on March 26, 2014 in Boston’s Back Bay.

To support my fundraising efforts, I will be hosting a fundraising event on Saturday, March 30th at Down The Road Brewery.

We will have food, cool raffles, entertainment and of course…BEER! Our friends at DTR will also be unveiling a special brew in honor of the LCF with a portion of the proceeds benefiting this cause. There will be a suggested donation at the door.

We hope you can make it for a fun night and a great cause. I really appreciate all the support I’ve received so far and look forward to seeing you there!

If you’re unable to make the event but would still like to donate page link is included below.

Any contribution you are able to make helps.

Thank you!

Sam Reid & The Riot Act

Sam Reid and the Riot Act is an American roots and bluegrass band of the un-pure variety, with plenty of flatpicking and three-part harmonies punctuated by driving drums and Caribbean rhythms. The band delivers their own brand of live acoustic music influenced and continually inspired by traditional Irish/Scottish/Appalachian fiddle tunes and the rhythms of the vast Caribbean Sea. Sam grew up flatpicking bluegrass guitar outside of Boston and joined up with Johnny Ransom while the two were members of country/punk outfit Three Day Threshold. Gettysburg, PA's own John Campbell holds it all together with hypnotizing drums which make it nearly impossible not to stomp yer feet. http://www.samreidandtheriotact.com

We are proud to be in collaboration with Another Brewing Company & Down The Road Beer Co. in creating “Diamonds,” a unique and abundantly fun style of beer: India Pale Hefeweizen double dry-hopped with BRU-1, Citra and Falconer’s Flight hops, peaking at 6.5% ABV.

THE SOUND.

(Provided by Fully Funktional Audio)
In our efforts to reconstruct and strengthen what the underground community has to offer in Boston, a dream is being brought to life. We are ecstatic to be installing a Funktion-One (Official) sound-system at the brewery for this event to showcase the sounds of your favorite local artists—because locals do it better, and deserve to play on arguably the best club sound-system on the planet.

THE ARTISTS.

Randy Deshaies (DOTC)
Brianna Paon (Infra)
Matt Foley (Re:Set)

Our first limited run of Infra apparel will be available for purchase on-site, as well as 4-pack cans of Diamonds to take home.

Brad Parsons & Starbird

Seeing Brad Parsons Band is an experience you won't easily forget. The Portland-based singer-songwriter has been enrapturing audiences across the country with his almost-unreal powerhouse of a voice and his genre-bending blend of psychedelic rock and Americana.

His songs and style aim to hit you right in your chest and his big voice goes for your gut. He begs you to sing, shout, dance, laugh and cry with him in songs that sound like standards but are wholly unique to his own style.

It's not just his steadily growing fan base that knows that he's got something special going on. The former member of horse feathers gets a lot of love from other musicians, including being tapped as a special guest for Fruition on Jam Cruise, and artist at large for Winter Wonder Grass Tahoe and Northwest String Summit.
